The Rules

Your book should be a success. Period. Even if you've written The Medieval History of Upper Ytterbia, A Love Story, there are enough Upper Ytterbians out there who will buy your book. The trick is keeping as much of the money for yourself as possible. Whether you choose to let Slow Toast Press help with that effort or not, we've found a couple of little rules to help make sure you do.

First, never enter into an agreement containing the word "EXCLUSIVE". You're going to need multiple sources for your book for different markets and you can't be locked in with a single supplier. The one possible exception is Amazon's KDP Select program because it has some useful marketing tools and it's for a limited - and short - time.

Second, don't let your friend's kid do the cover or edit the book, unless your friend's kid is a pro. Do not break this rule. You'll be stuck with the choice of having a book that looks like crap and reads like crap, or pissing off your friend. Follow-on: your critique group also can't be your editors. You need a pro.

Third, 90% of the work is in the editing and marketing. Writing the book is the easy part. This, and the cover, will consume you. This is where your money will be spent - and this is where your money will be made. We've seen what happens when you do this right, and we've seen what happens when you do this wrong.

Fourth, it's really going to be a lot of fun. Really.
